Countertop seams. The good and the ugly.

Countertop seams. The good and the ugly.

Did you know that you could have seams on your countertop? Maybe you’ve come across them before on various counters, but they were so seamless (pun intended), that you didn’t even notice them! Or maybe the seam was completed very poorly and you noticed right away.

Here’s a couple of facts and do’s and don'ts about seams.

What is a countertop seam?
It’s when two pieces of stone come together on an area of your countertop.

Why are countertop seams placed?
Typically seams are done because the countertop being installed is of a greater length than the slab that the stone comes in. So you take two or more pieces of stone and glue them together during installation.

Another reason we would place a seam is dependent on the entry to the area the stone is being installed. For example, if there is a really large piece of stone being installed but the entry to the home is narrow and has a few hallways to walk through to the installation area, then the piece might need to be cut appropriately and safely be installed.

Should you notice the seam?
Ideally, you don’t notice the seam unless you are looking for it. A lot of this depends on the design of the stone but a bigger factor is who is fabricating and installing your beautiful new countertops.

Fabricating stone for your home renovation is an art. Not just anyone should be hired for the job! At Divine stoneworks we put a lot of effort into our hiring and training processes so that we can continue to provide top notch work for you. We also are continually investing in innovative equipment and tools to make sure we are staying efficient and design focused.

You also want to make sure the technician to install your counters looks at your remodel like artwork! Our install techs will carefully place your countertops in your home and then fill any seams with the correct color to match your stone. It’s not a one color fits all type of thing. The technician will take their time mixing the best color just for your project!

Here are some do’s and don’ts of seam work.

DO
Make sure the veining of the stone lines up!

DON'T
You typically cannot use a remnant of a natural stone with a new slab of the same stone. Natural stone has a huge variety in colors and patterns within the same type of stone. You could be doing your counters in White Lava granite (specific color), but if they cut 100 slabs of stone at once, the first and last slab that they cut from the earth could look different and not pair well together. This is part of what makes natural stones so unique and beautiful.

When working with natural stones especially, it’s important that you have the material coming from the same lot and cut near one another to make for the best match in seaming two pieces together.

DO
Make sure your countertops are installed by a skilled professional. They will make sure the countertops are even and matched at the seam.

DON'T
You do not want one stone’s grain pattern going left to right, be up against a piece that the pattern is going up and down. It won’t flow correctly and the naked eye will easily catch this seam because it won’t look right. Ensure the two pieces of stone you are putting together follow the same direction in the graining and veins.

We hope that this helps you understand countertop seams a little better and what to look out for. At Divine Stoneworks, you can be sure that if seams are needed, they will be seamless!
